John Mellencamp
John Mellencamp may very well be the defining sound of
Middle America.  His Roots Rock found a large audience and an unexpected amount of hits.  His music reflected his love of the American Heartland, and that portion of America seemed to love him back.

Inducted in 2008.  From Seymour, Indiana, U.S.A.

Long overdue. Mr. Cougar is as important to the perpetuation of rock in the 80's as any artist. I mean true rock. A songwriter that touched the very fabric and soul of americana, Cougar became hugely popular almost overnight with the monster album American Fool but he had most definitely paid his dues and found a voice that fit what people wanted to hear. Some of his lyrics are Dylanesque in stature and though many feel that he was too popular to be inducted and that he sold out for success, the continuation of his career thoughout the present has shown what a great artist he is. Just because your popular does not mean you do not belong. It just means people are listenign to what you are saying and he had an awful lot to say.
