The Band

Originally the backing group for Ronnie Hawkins, than Bob Dylan, the Band came by their name naturally as they were often the band that was backing up other stars.  When they struck out on their own they created the best Roots Rock of their day (or any other day) and their first two albums (Music Form Big Pink & The Band) are enough to warrant their induction.

Inducted in 1994.  From Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Rick Danko (bass, vocals), Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, vocals), Garth Hudson (organ, horns), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, vocals), Robbie Robertson (guitar)

Baseball's "Mechanica l Man" was an outstanding second baseman and was easily elected to the Hall of Fame not long after he retired with an impressive set of offensive and defensive statistics. But his lack of flash and flamboyancy has rendered him almost invisible to many baseball fans, even knowledgeable ones.A similar situation defines the Band. Casual rock fans might know a couple of the Band's songs
