122. The Offspring
With the music world looking for Alternative superstars, the table was set for the Offspring’s brand of Punk, Pop and Metal to be a hit. They came across like overnight sensations (they weren’t) and their 1994 album, Smash, remains the best selling independent album in history. They would become known for their sarcastic and fun lyrics and always rooted their themes that were easily identifiable. This made them very accessible for a band that was still labelled as Alternative. The question that the Hall of Fame voters will pose is was this band “serious” enough for them to be included.

The Bullet Points

  • Eligible Since: Wednesday, 01 January 2014

  • Why they will get in: They achieved a level of success and popularity that few other Alternative bands can match.

A big fan of them, but honestly I don't see them making it. Despite what some people claim, there music has actually evolved a lot, especially since the new millennium began, but they are likely to be one of those who end up getting lost in the shuffle.
As for whether they deserve to make it... personally I'd say yes, but it would not bother me in the slightest if they don't end up getting in.

I own every album the Offspring have ever put out, but I doubt they will ever make it. Unfortunatel y for them their closest contemporary , Green Day, is just a better band in the eyes of most of the music world and will be eligible after The Offspring are. That will keep their early momentum to a minimum and probably ultimately keep them out.
