11. Joy Division

As seen with our sixth selection the NIHOF committee elected to separate New Order and Joy Division. We may reevaluate that decision one day, but considering the separate “life of its own” that Joy Division appears to be garnishing lately; it made more sense to us to create individual entries.

The suicide of lead singer, Ian Curtis cut Joy Division short before it really got started. Considered in some circles to be the most important act in the Post Punk movement, Joy Division parlayed an all too brief career into cult status. Forgoing the rapid energy of Punk riffs, they turned to haunting melodies and melancholy lyrics. Joy Division did not sell a lot of albums in their initial run to be considered a commercially successful act; yet time is shining a positive light on their legacy. Recent years have produced a feature film and a documentary, and they have been cited as a major influence by many successful bands. As much as we would love to see Ian Curtis inducted his best shot may be if Joy Division is packaged with New Order. Currently, there has yet to be a Non-American artist with limited North American success whom is in the Hall. Could Joy Division be the first?
