195. The Sweet

Considered by some to be the most successful band to wear the Glam Rock label, a further look at The Sweet would see a band that went through different style changes and were precursors to genres that would come after.

Basically a Bubblegum band in its inception, Sweet would morph Bubblegum harmonies with distorted guitars. The songs were catchy, radio friendly and with a Glam Rock sound they were considered credible. After the Glam period ended, they still managed a decent run. Arguments have even been made that Sweet’s songs could be considered the blueprint for the Hair Metal of the 1980’s. That is debatable, but there is little debate that many of their singles have held up better than was likely expected. Their Hall chances are slim, but should the Hall feel that one more Glam Rock band should be in the Hall; it is possible that they could get that nod before T-Rex or others.

People don't realize how much The Sweet influenced many bands that followed them. Kiss, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, I am sure there are more. The Sweet just seemed to get lost in the shuffle during the golden age of Brit Rock (1965-75). They definitely could hold their own. What a fantastic catalogue of music. I strongly urge anyone to rediscover this group and their music. Brian Connolly - what a fantastic and versatile voice. Just listen to Lettres D'amore. It just sends shivers up my spine. Great musicianship from Andy Scott and Mick Tucker. Steve Priest brought the charisma and Brian was the epitome of a rock and roll front man. There was something so special about the rock and roll scene in the UK during the 70s. I don't think it will ever be recaptured. The UK needs to do a better job of recognizing this important cultural export that influenced all music around the world.

This is one of those groups when you judge them on the criteria listed they just seem to barely miss out on each category. The question is does the accumulation of all of those categories as almost but not quite make them hall worthy? probably not but man are they fun to listen to.
