142. Pet Shop Boys

Is it possible for a group that has stated that they hate Rock music to ever be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? This is the question we pose when discussing the Pet Shop Boys, the British Dance music duo who may be the most critically acclaimed of their genre.

Simply calling the Pet Shop Boys a Dance group is a little unfair. From their beginnings in the mid 80’s, they penned clever lyrics wrapped around danceable arrangements. They easily shifted styles to reflect the Dance scene around them effortless moving from Disco to House to Techno and back again. Although they did not create Electronica, they certainly pushed its boundaries and are a lot more influential than people think they are. Although we can’t see them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it wouldn’t be an abomination if they somehow got a nomination down the road.

Very underrated guys--if you listen below the surface tech style of the arrangements (which has always remained pretty much the same), you'll find some very intelligent, heartfelt & imaginative songs. The RRHOF doesn't seem inclined to limit itself to strictly rock 'n' roll, anyway. I suspect the Hall will hold "How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously?" against them, though, even with their criticism being well-founded .

'Is it possible for a group that has stated that they hate Rock music to ever be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?' - Is it possible for an individual who has stated they hate their job to ever be given an 'Employe e of the Decade' award? - YES...If they were able to push their boundaries, were inspirationa l in their endeavours, pushed boundaries for changes that expanded the audience - YES, of course they deserve it!...Long live PSB: unafraid to be honest, and point out their opinions : )!

I woke up every morning to West End Girls or Your Love by the Outfield in 1986. My roommate had a very eclectic tase in music. The pet Shop Days always seemed the next step in the evolution of electronica or synth pop music which was so huge in the 80's They just seemed that much better. The key question is are they rock enough? Well with some of the recent artists who have been elected that question is becoming more and more moot. really the question is if the genre they are representing is big enough (disco, rap) and if the artist is of large enough status to be representati ve of that genre such as an ABBA or Run DMC. sadly i think the Boys just barely miss on all accounts.
