Relationships will ALWAYS be the crux of a high fraction of songs. This is one of those rare musical facts that actually transcend genres and eras, and we feel very comfortable guaranteeing that this won’t change in the centuries to come. With that said, just because this is a common topic, doesn’t make those songs necessarily good.
In the mid 90’s, the Texas based band, Deep Blue Something, scored their only hit with Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The lame song discusses the tribulations of a couple who have realized they have nothing in common with the possible exception of watching the Audrey Hepburn movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Let’s see if we understand this correctly….a thirty five year old chick flick is the only thing that bonds them? The thing is, if the guy is desperate enough to rattle off things that they have in common, and THIS is the first (and only) thing he comes up, isn’t that evidence that the relationship is deader than the people who starred in that film? Maybe the rest of their album looked at other aspects of the relationship, but like the rest of you, we never heard it either.
