The Oakland Raiders had a pirate on their helmet and nobody embodied that renegade image more than Ken Stabler. Coincidently, that very image that made him so popular may be what inhibits him from Hall contention.
Stabler wasn’t just popular because of his tough everyman personality. “The Snake” was also a very successful quarterback who always found a way to win. He was a classic drop back passer and executed the Raiders offensive brilliantly. Stabler wasn’t the strongest of passers, but he led Oakland to many a come from behind victory. He was the type of quarterback that players believed in now matter what the scoreboard said. He would lead the Raiders to a Super Bowl victory and in 1974 won the NFL MVP Award.
Stabler did have a high amount of interceptions and is currently higher on that all time list than touchdown passes. That stat alone works against Stabler, but if the Hall goes primarily by pure guts and leadership, the Snake would have already been inducted.
