17. Steve Atwater
At present only John Elway is in the only representative in the Football Hall of Fame from their late 90’s back to back Super Bowls.  It should not be forgotten that their defense had a lot to do with those wins and a big part of that Broncos “D’” was Steve Atwater.

Atwater played at Free Safety, but he was far from the traditional Safety.  He was often used as an eight man in the defensive front and as such he racked up a large amount of tackles for a Safety.  Atwater would become the captain of the Bronco’s defense and would help lead them to two Super Bowl wins.

There are few Safeties in the Football Hall of Fame, and the fact that Atwater was not always used in the traditional role will either help or hinder his induction chances.  Which way the meter goes is yet to be determined.

Quite possibly the hardest hitting safety in NFL history.

Atwater was a monster and master at his position. it's a shame he's not in the HOF.

My favorite team as a kid was those 90's Denver teams. Honestly, why do you think they finally won two super bowls? Elway is arguably the best QB of all time, or top 5 at the very least,, it sure wasn't his fault they lost their first 3 attempts. Their D becoming stellar like it was before Elway in the 70's is why they finally got over the hump. Hell Elway was in no way in his prime when they won it, for his age he was probably playing closer to his prime than any athlete ever in his final seasons, but it still proves that no matter how great your QB is, guys like Atwater were game changers. I mean just look at his numbers in the 90's, how can a guy be one of the most dominantly great players at his position and be a part of so much success without being in?
