gold star for USAHOF

Steve Stamkos: 60 Goals

We would like to congratulate Steve Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning for his 60th goal of the season.  This is the 39th time an NHL player has hit this mark, and the first time for Stamkos.  In only his fourth season, we aren't looking to put him in the Hockey Hall of Fame, but he would like to state that he is carving out a serious path towards it.

Throughout the 80's, the 60 goal plateau was hit nineteen times.   In that high flying decade, lighting the lamp was common place and it was not just Hall of Famers who hit that number as evidenced by Bernie Nicholls and Dennis Maruk (who is not even in our NIHOF 100).  The following decade saw that mark hit nine times, but since 2000 rules changes have greatly reduced the goal totals in the National Hockey League.  Stamkos joins Alex Ovechkin (a likely Hall of Famer) as the second man this millenium to hit that total.

Does this make him a Hall of Famer?  Not yet, but we will bet him not following the path of Dennis Maruk.
