gold star for USAHOF

45. Valeri Zelepukin

The NHL brain trusts had not quite yet comfortable drafting Russian players, though 1990 was arguably the last season where the GMs would be gun-shy.  In this draft, the New Jersey Devils had an absolute steal in the 11thRound in Left Wing Valeri Zelepukin.

After he was drafted, Zelepukin played one more year with Khimik of the Russian League before going stateside to join New Jersey.  He split his rookie year between New Jersey and Utica of the AHL before staying for good in 1992, where he had a career-high 63 Points.  Zelepukin scored 57 Points the following year, but an eye injury suffered in practice held him to four Regular Season Games in 1994-95, but he played in that post-season where New Jersey won their first Stanley Cup.

Zelepukin was not the same after his eye injury, and he remained with the Devils until the middle of the 1997-98 campaign when he was traded to Edmonton.  He left the team with 218 Points.
