Gordie Howe called Fern Flaman the toughest defenceman he ever faced.  If that is true, that is about as good as an endorsement as anyone could ask for.
Flaman played the blue line rugged and stingy and was considered amongst the toughest in a very tough sport.  Flaman would have two stints in Boston, which sandwiched a run in Toronto, where he would win his only Stanley Cup.  Still, it was in Boston, where he would be named a Second Team All-Star thre times.  He entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.
