gold star for USAHOF

Red Kelly

Red Kelly
Although there may have been other NHL players who have excelled at two different positions, perhaps nobody did it better than Red Kelly. Certainly, no other was as successful.

A star Defenceman with the Detroit Red Wings, Kelly won the Norris Trophy in 1954 and won four Stanley Cups while in the Motor City. Kelly could step in as a Forward when needed, and it was fairly easy for him to do as his offensive acumen was strong. Upon being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, he was converted to a Centre and though he was not a perennial All Star anymore, he was still very effective and was a good playmaker. The Leafs became just as good as Detroit, and Kelly won four additional Cups, the last of which being in 1967 whereby Kelly retired as a player shortly after. The Hockey Hall of Fame waived their three year wait, and he was inducted in 1969 as the star of the Class.
