47. Joe Klecko

If popularity in New York City was enough to get inducted into the Football Hall of Fame, there is a good chance that Joe Klecko would have already been inducted.  As we know, that is not the only criteria and the popular former New York Jet remains a popular candidate among those who hang around Fireman Ed, though not among committee members.

As a member of the “New York Sack Exchange” Joe Klecko was naturally strong and fundamentally gifted.  He would have led the National Football League in sacks in 1981 had that been a recognized statistic then and was recognized as the best defensive player by many football critics that year.  Klecko was known throughout football for his intensity and was constantly double teamed.  Had he stayed in one position through his career, it is very possible that his regard amongst critics would have improved.  As it stands now, his biggest post career accolade will likely remain the retirement of his number by the Jets.
