Gary Pig Gold 1
Gary Pig Gold, International Pop Overthrow (IPO), New York City 2010

Born in 1955’s Port Credit, an Ontario suburb of Toronto, Canada, Gary Gold grew up to be a singer songwriter, musician, record producer, arranger, film maker, record label owner, publisher, editor, and columnist; a champion of indie artists and the music world at large, who now lives on the other side of the border, in the United State of America. Gary grew up with a big band drummer for a father and a mother who still sings with the Mississauga Choral Society. Listening to his dad’s 78-rpm jazz records and the bubblegum that snapped, crackled and popped from Toronto radio station CHUM AM, Gary Gold formed his own band at the age of 13. He called it Pornographic Cornflake, totally inspired was he by a Walrus and The Beatles. The band name also appears to be an early indication of the importance breakfast cereal would have in his life. At seventeen, Gold shot a film about his hometown, and called it This is Port Credit! The film won the competition at his high school, but before the 16mm doc could be aired on PBS television, Gold was advised to credit the film to a fictitious director. Something potentially libellous blew in the broadcast wind. Sitting at the kitchen table one morning, a plastic pig stamper fell from Gary’s box of Weetabix and rising up from the breakfast bowl, the pseudonym Gary Pig was born.
