Tim Duncan was a superstar on the court, but so quiet off of it that as great as he was and as sure he will enter the Basketball Hall on his first ballot, he might be the most underrated player of all time. We won't do that here as we will actually rank him AHEAD of the more popular Kobe Bryant, who is also a lock for the Hall on his first attempt.
What couldn’t he do with a basketball? The man dubbed “Big Fundamental” averaged a double double in his first thirteen seasons, all of which saw him make both an All NBA and All Defensive team. This is a feat that NOBODY has ever done. While the San Antonio Spurs could not necessarilly be considered a dynasty, over his tenure he took them to a NBA Championship five times. With the exception of his final year he never had a PER lower than 20. The two time league MVP is ranked in the top fifteen in VORP, Win Shares, Box Plus/Minus and PER. Only legends do that!
What we are talking about is a player who a case could be made that he was the best of his era, but his name doesn’t come up that much for that, and he is probably just fine with that.
Duncan will get inducted on the first ballot and he will deliver a quiet acceptance speech. That also seems like a lock doesn’t it?
