Following the 1886 season, O’Neill would put forth one of the greatest seasons in Baseball and arguably the best one in the brief history of the American Association. In 1887, the Outfielder would finish first in Runs Scored (167), Hits (225), Doubles (52), Triples (19), Home Runs (14), RBIs (123), Batting Average (.435), On Base Percentage (.480) and Slugging Percentage (.691). Nobody will ever do that again.
That included O’Neill who cooled off but would still win the American Association Batting Title in 1888 with a .335 Average, which was the same number he had in 1889 but was not enough to finish first that year. O’Neill would record 1,091 Hits with a .344 Batting Average and a .406 On Pace Percentage.
The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame annually awards the “Tip O’Neill Award” to the best Canadian Baseball Player of the Year.
