The Shortstop finished first in Defensive bWAR three times and was the runner-up five times and he is still in the top twenty all-time in that category. Marion was not a great hitter but he did have a .264 Batting Average as a Cardinal, which remember was not terrible for a Shortstop in that day.
Marion did not go to World War II (a childhood leg injury rendered him ineligible) and was one of the few legitimate stars to remain behind. He would be named for eight All-Star Games and again while he was not known for his hitting his defensive prowess propelled him to a National League MVP win in 1944. He would help the Redbirds win three World Series Championships (1942, 1944 & 1946), which makes him one of the most successful players in franchise history.Marion was inducted to the Cardinals Hall of Fame in the first year of its existence in 2014.
