Chris Carpenter began his career with the Toronto Blue Jays where he was a middle-of-the-road Starting Pitcher.  The Jays essentially gave up on him after the 2002 season offering him a minor league deal, which he refused.  The Cardinals would sign him and after rehabbing his elbow through the entire 2003 season he would make the starting rotation in 2004, but it is safe to say that he exceeded all expectations.

Carpenter went 15 and 5 in 2004 but would explode with a Cy Young Award-winning 21 and 5 season where he would go to his first All-Star Game with a 2.83 ERA.  2006 would see him earn his second All-Star Game where he would lead the NL in WHIP and was third in Cy Young voting.  Even better, as the ace of the staff, he would take the Redbirds to the World Series in a win over the Detroit Tigers.  These were two great years but Carpenter would elbow problems would return and he missed most of 2007 and 2008.

He couldn’t possibly come back from this again, could he?

Yes, he could!

Carpenter was the 2009 National League Comeback Player of the Year, the ERA leader, and was the runner-up for the Cy Young.  He went to his third All-Star Game in 2010 and he would help the Card win the World Series again in 2011.  Injuries piled up again and he was barely played in 2012 and had to sit out in 2013.  He would retire shortly after.

As a St. Louis Cardinal he would record 95 Wins, which might be 95 more than many thought he would!

The Cardinals inducted Carpenter into their Hall of Fame in 2016.
