Known as “Nails” Dykstra’s hard nosed style of play fit the dynamic of not just the city of Philadelphia but the team as well. As the Phillies’ starting Centerfielder, he would be named an All Star three times but his career in Philadelphia would be marked with many highs and many lows. Dykstra was injured often but when healthy he was a vital contributor to the team. In 1990 he would lead the National League in On Base Percentage and Hits but it would be 1993 where Dykstra would have his best year in Baseball. “Nails” would be the runner-up behind Barry Bonds) for the National League MVP and he would lead the league in Hits, Runs Scored and Walks while posting a career high .902 OPS. More importantly he took the Phillies to the World Series and while they lost to the Toronto Blue Jays, no blame can fall on Dykstra’s shoulders as ne hit four Home Runs with a Slash Line of .348/.500/.913.
Sadly for Dykstra, he is more known for his post career troubles. He is alleged to have used PEDs during his career and his failed business ventured landed him in jail for three years on fraud charges.
Having said that, we think the city of Philadelphia still loves him regardless!
