For the first four seasons of his Major League career, Jack Coombs was an average Pitcher at best and did not have any remarkable moments.  He was 35-35, and in 1910, his season started so poorly that he was demoted to the bullpen.  The legend has it that he rediscovered his overhand curve, and he went on a tear that had no equal in Athletics history.

Coombs was practically untouchable for the rest of the year, and he would finish the year 31-9 with an ERA of 1.30.  Fittingly, he won three Games in the Athletics 1910 World Series win.  Coombs was good the year after with his second straight Wins Title (28), though his ERA ballooned to 3.53.  Coombs would again help Philadelphia win the World Series, and scored a Win by defeating the legendary Christy Mathewson.

Coombs won 21 Games in 1912 but wasn't the same, and he missed most of the next two seasons due to illness.  He would be released shortly after that.

With Philadelphia, Coombs went 115-67, and was chosen for the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame in 1992.
