David Cone would become known (right or wrong) as a “gun for hire”, a Pitcher who could get you over the hump.  While he was often a Cy Young contender the only time he did win the award was in 1994…when he was a member of the Kansas City Royals.

Cone was actually drafted by Kansas City and he would debut for them in 1986 but was traded to the Mets shortly after and where he would first prove himself as a star Pitcher.  Cone returned as a Free Agent in 1993 and while his first season back saw him with a losing 11 and 14 record, he was actually third among all AL Pitchers in bWAR and was fourth in Strikeouts.  In the strike shortened 1994 season Cone was first in bWAR for Pitchers and won the coveted Cy Young.  He also finished ninth in MVP balloting that year.

While he was only a Royal for two years (and 11 Games as a rookie) those two years were more than good enough to place him above far more tenured Pitchers.
