A National Champion at Arizona State Larry Gura would have mediocre stints with the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees before the latter traded him to Kansas City.  It would be in the Midwest where the southpaw would find himself as the Royals’ sometimes ace.

After a pair of seasons (1976 & 1977) where he bounced from the rotation to the bullpen, Gura would have a breakout season where he went 16-4 and finished seventh in Cy Young voting.  The season was especially sweet as in the ALCS he finally beat his former team (New York) in the post-season after failing to do so in the ’76 and ’77 playoffs.  1980 would be the best year of Gura’s career where he would go to his first and only All-Star Game with an 18-10 record and a 6th place Cy Young finish.  Gura would again defeat the Yankees in the ALCS en route to the team’s first World Series appearance.

Overall, Gura would win 111 Games for Kansas City and was inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame in 1992.
