There are many who might think the ranking of Kevin Appier is very high.  We get that.  He was an All Star only once and was never a 20 Game winner.  Realistically he was a Cy Young candidate only once in his career (1993) where he finished third in voting, a season where he would win the ERA Title.  This seems good, but third overall for a franchise?

Yes it is.

Kevin Appier did a lot of things very well and did them for a small market team that was not particularly good during his tenure there.  As a Royal, Appier finished in the top ten in bWAR for Pitchers seven times, including a number one finish in 1993.  Four times he was in top five in Earned Run Average, and six times he was in the top ten in WHIP.  He would also lead the American League twice in both FIP and Win Probability Added.  Had he played now, his profile would have been higher that it was, though history tells us that Kansas City had a gem on their hands.  Actually, if he played now, would a higher market team have poached him midway through his first Royals tenure?
