Before he could reach the Seattle Mariners (the team that drafted him in the 14th Round in 1994), he was traded to the Red Sox on the 1997 trading deadline.  Two years later, he would be Boston's starting Catcher.

Varitek did not just become their Catcher but would ascend to becoming their team captain, which was only the fourth time that the franchise would anoint one.  Varitek was not always the best hitter, but he provided good power with three 20 Home Run seasons, and he knew how to handle a pitching staff as good as anyone that the American League had.  With his assistance, Boston won the 2004 & 2007 World Series, and individually he was a three-time All-Star won the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove in 2005.

Varitek played until 2011 in a Major League career spent entirely with Boston.  He would have 193 Home Runs and 1,307 Hits and entered the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2016.
