Luis Tiant was an All-Star in 1968, winning the ERA Title as a member of the Cleveland Indians, but two years later, he was struggling and was offered a minor league contract with the Red Sox in 1971.  He was called up, but only went 1-7 with a 4.85 ERA, so in the following season, there were lowered expectations for the native of Cuba.  What followed was the most the emergence of the most popular hurler of the 70s in New England.

Tiant would win the ERA Title with a 1.91 stat, and he would win 15 Games against only six losses.  The Cuban won at least 20 Games in three of the next four seasons, going to the All-Star Game in two of them.  The BoSox won the 1975 American League Pennant, and though they lost the World Series to Cincinnati, he went 3-0 with 20 Strikeouts in the playoffs.  Three times, he was in the top six in Cy Young voting, and other than 1971, he never had a losing record with Boston.

He would leave Boston for the division rival, New York, after the 1978 season.  Tiant would have a record of 122-81 with 1,075 Strikeouts with the Red Sox.  He was elected to the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1997.
