Powell never looked like a star. He had a sideline delivery and did not dazzle anyone with his arm speed, but he was crafty and found ways to get batters out. He joined the Browns the first time when he jumped from St. Louis of the National League, and he had 22 Wins in his first year in the American League. He was traded to the New York Highlanders, who sold him back two years later, and he would have four years where he was in the top ten in WHIP, and in 1906, he was fourth in ERA with a 1.77 mark.
He played with St. Louis until 1912 when he was released.
